Book Review: Shadows of Emerald Ruin by Jacki C. Golden
This book had me in a chokehold! Just the knowledge of vampires and deadly trials was enough for me to know I was in for a great time! And let me tell you, it was!
The characters were amazing! Both Rhosyn and Draven are so complex, each with their own battles, shortcomings, and internal struggles.
Rhosyn is an undeniable force. She is fierce and strong and brave; she is not afraid to speak her mind and hold a dagger to the throat of the literal king of her kingdom! She has been through so much, and yet she perseveres. Even in her perceived moments of weakness, she was so strong, and I just wanted to give her a hug.
Draven is the dangerous and mysterious Vampire King. He has a hard exterior but is really just a sweet cinnamon roll who only wants the best for his people and Rhosyn. I loved his character growth, and I can't wait for the next book to see him continue to find his voice as king.
And them together... it was passion and fire! Their banter was top-notch, but what I loved the most was the way they both found comfort in one another and shared their trauma and grief; it was vulnerable, beautiful, and heartbreaking. The author did an incredible job capturing their emotions and making you feel along with them. I cried multiple times in this book!
Liviana is also an outstanding side character, and her friendship with Rhosyn was a definite highlight of the book!
The plot was brilliant, the pacing was perfect, the trials and action were gripping, and everything wrapped up wonderfully! I am so excited to see what comes next in book 2!
